What should you know about collectible action figures? Collecting action figures can become a fascinating hobby, passion, and business. You return to an age where you enjoyed certain comic book characters or movie heroes.
First perhaps we can define an action figure. They are usually between 3 inches to 11 inches. Usually there is no movement as they are to be displayed and not played with.
Star Wars may have been your most favorite movie of all time and you decide that you will begin collecting those figures since you already know these characters like friends. When you focus on a collection it gives you the chance to only purchase within that collection without being distracted and buying a Batman one day and then Spider-Man another day. You may have had many favorite figures as a child and you decide to start a collection of all your favorites. In a way this could be expensive but it could make you very happy.
You may want to only collect the figures where the workmanship is very fine. These figures are beautiful pieces of art. With this decision you would be collecting only specific pieces.
There are many sites that will help you decide on your first purchase. Read the news and blogs available about action figures. You may be able to even find one that is focused on the figure you are interested in.
Where should you look other than the internet? Toy stores or toy sections in stores are a good source. Remember to keep that focus on the particular figure you want to start with. It often happens that someone is cleaning out the attic or garage. A garage sale offers the opportunity to find some rather special gems. Flea markets and thrift stores can also be a source that may be of interest to you.
Now that you have started your collection they must be displayed. A nice glass enclosed display case would be great. However, if you do not have one then you could put them on a shelf or bookcase nicely set up to show off their action pose.
Maintenance is a key word. You do not want your figures to be damaged by the sun, heat, humidity or dust. The action figure may be indestructible in the movie or comic book but it is not indestructible on your shelf or in storage. As for anything that you want clean regular maintenance is the important.
If you have mint in package figures then these need care also. The package requires care because it was never made to last but to be opened and thrown away. Again heat and sun are problems that you must be wary of.
Another way to take care of your collection is to have it insured. Your investment should be protected in as many ways as possible. Perhaps you home insurance would provide coverage but it is best to be sure. Your insurance agent can tell you if you are covered or if a floater will be what you need. You may also want to look into the insurance that is specifically for collectibles.
